Through-Hardened Cutting Rules

Through-hardened rules have the same hardness in body and edge. A specific tempering and decarburization process achieves a specific rule structure with a soft deep decarburization zone, which results in excellent bending properties. In general, Bohler, Viking, and Helmold cutting edges and bevels have a shaved finish for highest accuracy.

Bohler Top

Body: 45 HRC
Edge: 45 HRC
Thicknesses: 1.5 / 2 / 3 / 4
Heights (Based on Thickness): .865 – 3.937

Description

Top cutting rule offers good bendability, and the body-edge hardness is well balanced for cutting abrasive materials, e.g. solid boxboard, corrugated board, labels, postcards, …

  • Through Hardened – Medium Hard
  • Low – Medium volume runs
  • Cost effective all-purpose rule
  • Ideal for paperboard, boxboard, and corrugated
  • Similar rules include; Viking MM44 and Helmold H65

Viking MM

Body: 34 / 40 / 44 / 47 / 52HRC
Edge: 34 / 40 / 44 / 47 / 52HRC
Thicknesses: 1.5 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 6
Heights (Based on Thickness): .315 (8mm), .375 (9.5mm), .394 (10mm), .473 – 3.937

Description

MM cutting rule is an all-purpose, through-hardened cutting rule used primarily for folding carton and corrugated materials.  The 40 and 44 hardness are the most common and most readily available.

  • The same body and cutting edge hardness
  • Good bendability due to soft and ductile surface layer
  • Small to medium size runs
  • Good bending properties
  • All-purpose rule (carton, corrugated)
  • Similar rules include; Bohler Top and Helmold H65

Helmold 65 Ultraflex

Body: 45 HRC
Edge: 45 HRC
Thicknesses: 1.5 / 2 / 3 / 4
Heights: .375 – 2.000

Description

Helmold 65 is an all-purpose rule that offers good life when cutting a variety of substrates, e.g. solid boxboard, corrugated board, labels, postcards, …

  • Through Hardened – Medium Hard
  • Low – Medium volume runs
  • Cost-effective all-purpose rule.
  • Ideal for paperboard, boxboard, and corrugated
  • Similar rules include; Bohler Top and Viking MM

Bohler H 75

Body: 51 HRC
Edge: 51 HRC
Thicknesses: 2 / 3 / 4
Heights (Based on Thickness): .865 – 3.937

Description

H 75 is a very hard cutting rule which is still bendable to 85° and offers high stability in die cutting operations. The rule life is good when die cutting difficult materials, e.g. gaskets, rubber, cork, felts, beer mats, …

  • Through Hardened – Very Hard
  • Low – Medium volume runs
  • High stability and performance during difficult cutting operations.
  • Ideal for gaskets, rubber, cork, felt, and abrasive materials.
  • Similar rules include; Helmold 70

Helmold 70

Body: 50 HRC
Edge: 50 HRC
Thicknesses: 2 / 3 / 4
Heights (Based on Thickness): .250 – 1.250

Description

Helmold 70 is a through-hardened cutting rule that offers increased body strength, yielding improved cutting life for the packaging industry. This product would be classified as a hard rule resulting in longer durability for more abrasive cutting situations, e.g. gaskets, rubber, cork, felts, beer mats, …

  • Through Hardened – Hard
  • Low – Medium volume runs
  • High stability and performance during difficult cutting operations.
  • Ideal for gaskets, rubber, cork, felt, and abrasive materials.
  • Similar rules include; Bohler H 75

Helmold 80 / 85

Body: 54 / 58 HRC
Edge: 54 / 58 HRC
Thickness: 2
Heights: .500 – .937

Description

Both Helmold 80 and 85 are through-hardened cutting rules that are recommended for extreme applications that require a very hard body and edge.  Both of these rules are for straight work only.
